Hij schrijft hele diverse muziekstukken en dirigeert ze, ook in enorme zalen met een koor met 250 mensen. De thema’s die hij kiest raken ons mens-zijn op heel veel vlakken. Menselijk stem neemt vaak een prominente rol, wat er gezegd, gezongen, is heeft ook een grote betekenis. Wat inspireert hem? Ik vond een aantal uitspraken uit twee interviews van hem en wil ik graag met jullie delen.
Wat zijn de meest bekende muzieknummers van Christopher Tin?
Christopher Tin is heel bekend geworden van Baba Yetu (Onze Vader, in het Swahili) en Sogno di Volare (Ik Droom van Vliegen), de thema’s van de videogames Civilization IV en Civilization VI.
Baba Yetu is de eerste compositie ooit die een Grammy Award won terwijl die oorspronkelijk voor een videogame werd geschreven. Daaromheen bouwde Christopher zijn debuutalbum: Calling All Dawns ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2jzfVF7noA ).

Vraag over Calling all Dawns album: er zijn stukken in allerlei talen, na Swahili komt er Japans, Mandarijn Chinees, Portugees, Frans, Iers, Pools, Hebreeuws, Farsi, Sanskriet en Maori. Hoe is het zo ontstaan, tegelijkertijd met Baba Yetu, of daarna?
Christopher: Het gebeurde erna, nadat Baba Yetu z’n eigen leven begon te leiden … Toen had iemand voorgesteld om een heel album te maken die resoneert met Baba Yetu. En ik dacht, wat zal doen? Zal ik nog meer nummers componeren met christelijke teksten in verschillende Afrikaanse talen, of zal ik breder kijken? En toen kreeg ik een idee om iets heel divers en omvangrijk te maken. En ik hou van reizen, andere landen bezoeken, nieuwen mensen ontmoeten. Dingen leren over verschillende culturen, andere eten proeven… Dus voor mij was het een makkelijke keus – zullen we iets doen met mijn interesse in veelzijdigheid in nationaliteiten en culturen, verschillende religies en filosofieën. Daarnaast zal het voorkomen, dat ik een label krijg van “die kerel van Afrikaanse koormuziek”. De industrie zal niets liever hebben dan iemand ‘in een hokje te plaatsen”. En dus kwam ik bij “Calling all Dawns” (Een roep voor alle zonsopgangen), ik wou de hele wereld omhelzen en tegelijkertijd niet een slechte keus in mijn carrière maken. …
Vraag over open zijn over het proces: Dit album was gefinancierd via Kickstarter (een crowdfunding platform) en het was het hoogste bedrag voor het uitbrengen van een klassiek album die ooit via crowdfunding was opgebracht. U hebt een enorme openheid en transparantie laten zien over uw creatieve proces naar jouw publiek. Is het niet angstaanjagend? … Hoe was het voor u?
Christopher: Het was prima, dat vind ik leuk. Het is geweldig over muziek, het maken van muziek, met mensen te praten. … Het zet me aan het denken, aan het heroverwegen van mijn eigen aannames. … Het creatieve proces, die hoeft naar mijn inzicht niet “beschermd” te worden, tot op zekere hoogte. Niet dat ik wil dat er een stel mensen komt en zegt: “Dit moet daarin, deze noot is verkeerd, waarom doe je dit?” Nee, dat wil ik niet, maar ik vind het leuk om te delen wat ik aan het doen ben. En het is ook het ethos, of cultuur, van de Kickstarter…

You released a new album in August 2020, To Shiver the Sky, can you take us through the process of finding your inspiration and making it into a fully-realised album?
To Shiver the Sky is an oratorio about the history of flight that actually had its origins in a piece that I composed for the opening menu screen of the video game Civilization VI. The piece was entitled ‘Sogno di Volare’, and was a setting on Leonardo da Vinci’s writings on flight. I felt that I had more to say on the subject, and so I re-recorded the piece as the overture to the new album, then composed 10 additional movements, all settings of words by pioneers of aviation, including Jules Verne, Amelia Earhart, Yuri Gagarin and more.

It was a fantastically enjoyable process, and the subject matter allowed me a lot of ways to get very creative. For example, one of the movements is called “Astronomy”, and is a setting of words by Nicolaus Copernicus. And for that movement, I was able to actually create a pointillistic texture on the score, such that when you draw lines between the note heads, you actually draw out all the constellations related to flight.

Do you have an all-time favourite piece to listen to? Why that piece?
It’s not something I listen to regularly these days, but probably the piece that’s gotten the most play over my lifetime is the Rondo Finale of Mahler’s 5th Symphony. It’s sort of the skeleton key to unlock how I approach composing. It’s chock full of fantastic counterpoint, rich inner movement, tons of orchestral color, referentialism, and constant reinventions of rich thematic material in many guises. It’s just a magnificent piece of music, and probably the piece that I would choose as my desert island pick.
You compose in a range of styles and genres – do you have a certain style/composer/instrument that you often go back to when you need some inspiration?
There are a few composers that I’ll often turn to, mostly classical, film, and jazz. On the classical side I’m a fan of Prokofiev, Debussy, Mahler, Stravinsky, Copland… composers with music that’s chock full of great harmonic and textural ideas, but who could still write a fantastic tune. Film composers I adore are John Williams and Ennio Morricone. On the jazz side, I’ve loved a lot of Vince Mendoza’s stuff over the years–he’s a great arranger. Basically all of these composers know that each and every individual musical thought can be a special moment, and maximize that.
