Vanaf jaren 60 draaide het programma al om naar radio signalen uit de ruimte te luisteren en kijken of er patronen te ontdekken waren. Nu kijken ze ook naar extra parameters, zoals bv het verschil in de temperatuur van verschillende plekken op een planeet als bij noord- en zuidpool, waarbij verondersteld wordt, dat beschaving met hoogontwikkelde technische intelligentie zouden in staat zijn om temperatuur verschillen te verkleinen. En dan kan SETI gericht naar dit planeet luisteren, ook al zouden ze zelf niet communiceren.
