“Miljarden zijn bezig met buitenaards leven” onderzoek

Bestaan er planeten vol groengele mannetjes? Mensen houden zich graag bezig met de vraag of we alleen zijn in het universum, al dan niet aangewakkerd door sciencefictionfilms. De meerderheid (61 procent) van ons gelooft in buitenaards leven, blijkt uit wereldwijd onderzoek.

Niets zo mysterieus als andere planeten. De Star Wars-serie is al 40 jaar een hit, morgen gaat de nieuwste film, The Last Jedi, officieel in première. En aanstaande donderdag komt NASA met nieuws over de Kepler-missie. De Kepler-satelliet, ook bekend als de ‘planetenjager’, speurt het heelal af op zoek naar buitenaards leven.

Onderzoeksbureau Motivaction vond het tijd om eens te polsen hoe de mensheid nu echt denkt over buitenaards leven. Het wereldwijde Glocalities-onderzoek laat zien dat 61 procent van de mensheid gelooft in het bestaan van een vorm van leven op andere planeten en dat 47 procent gelooft in het bestaan van intelligente buitenaardse beschavingen in het heelal.
Van de 47 procent die gelooft dat er intelligente buitenaardse beschavingen zijn, zegt 60 procent dat mensen moeten proberen contact te zoeken met deze beschavingen. 21 procent zegt dat we dat niet moeten doen en 19 procent zegt het niet te weten.

Nuchtere Nederlanders
Toch blijken Nederlanders sceptisch in vergelijking met andere landen. Wereldwijd scoren we het laagst op het geloof in buitenaards leven. 43 procent gelooft in het bestaan van een vorm van leven op andere planeten (26 procent sluit dat uit en 31 procent zegt het niet te weten) en 28 procent gelooft in het bestaan van intelligente buitenaardse beschavingen (43 procent sluit dit uit en 29 procent zegt het niet te weten).
Het volledige onderzoek werd gehouden onder 26.492 mensen uit 24 landen. Martijn Lampert, onderzoeksdirecteur van Glocalities, licht zijn onderzoek toe in een persbericht: ,,Mensen die geloven in het bestaan van intelligente buitenaardse beschavingen zijn wereldwijd geen marginale minderheid, maar vormen een groot en onderscheidend segment van onconventionele en anti-autoritaire denkers met een passie voor wetenschap, technologie, cultuur, politiek en kunst.”

“Researching the belief in extraterrestrial life
Every fieldwork wave we include new questions in our global survey. The inclusion of the most recent questions on the existence of intelligent extraterrestrial life may be somewhat surprising. This curiosity was partly driven by my fascination for why space movies such as Star Wars have been so immensely successful for decades. A personal fascination with the mysteries of the universe, combined with recent (2012) research by astronomers estimating 100 billion habitable planets (earthlike) in our milky way, led me to define survey questions such as:

“Do you believe in the existence of some form of life on other planets?”

When we analyzed the data of the 26,492 respondents we found that actually 61% of the people in the 24 countries Glocalities survey say yes to this question. 17% rule this out and 22% say that they don’t know.

“Do you believe in the existence of intelligent alien civilizations in the universe?”

47% of the people in the Glocalities survey say that they do believe this. 26% rule this out and 28% say that they don’t know. The full survey report can be downloaded here.

By including those questions into the Glocalities survey, we are able to link people’s beliefs in extraterrestrial life with their backgrounds, values, lifestyle or country and create some revealing profiles.

Sometimes people who believe in the existence of intelligent alien civilizations are considered a marginal minority. The topic of belief in alien life is rarely discussed by journalists from mainstream media. So, it was very striking to discover that almost half of all the people included in this global survey confirm they believe there is intelligent life on other planets.”
